Festival season is finally here!
To ensure your festival experience doesn't end in stress right from the setup stage, it's worth taking a quick look at the most important camping rules for open-air festivals . Because: Not everything that's allowed at regular campsites is permitted at festivals.
Here you'll find general rules that apply to many festivals. Important: Always check the information provided by the specific organizer as well , as there may be variations.
Accommodation – group tents & more.
Large group tents or huge pavilions are not allowed or only allowed to a limited extent at many festivals. You should definitely check this beforehand.
The good news:
👉 Normal festival tents are usually allowed without any problems.
Compact, quick-to-erect tents are particularly practical – ideal if you want to start celebrating immediately after arriving and don't feel like spending a lot of time setting up.
Entrance to the campsite
The following applies to most festivals:
- Access to the camping area is only permitted with a valid ticket or festival wristband.
- Camping options often need to be booked separately.
It's best to organize everything in advance to avoid any unpleasant surprises at the entrance.
Electricity, generators & power units
Self-generated electricity is usually only permitted if it is noiseless :
- ✅ Solar panels are often not a problem
- ❌ Loud generators and power units are prohibited almost everywhere
Basic rule: Anything that bothers others is best left at home.
Barbecues & open fires
Barbecuing is allowed at many festival campgrounds – but open campfires are usually not .
Important to note:
- Charcoal grills are often undesirable due to the risk of fire.
- Camping stoves or small gas grills are often the better choice.
- Liquid barbecue lighter fluids are usually prohibited
- Large gas cylinders are prohibited.
- Small gas cartridges are often accepted
👉 Be sure to check in advance which types of grills are allowed.
Waste – please think about it
Cleanliness is a major issue at festivals. Therefore:
- Garbage bags are often handed out at the entrance.
- often against deposit
- Returning the filled bag = deposit refunded
This keeps the grounds clean – and everyone benefits.
Glass bottles & glass containers
Glass is almost always prohibited at festivals:
- Risk of injury
- Many areas are later used for agriculture.
Instead, they are:
- Tetrapaks
- plastic bottles
- cans
Usually allowed. But again, it's best to check beforehand.
Noise & Pyrotechnics
After a long day at the festival, many people want some peace and quiet in the camping area – especially at night. Consideration for others is simply part of the experience.
What is almost always forbidden:
- fireworks
- flares
- pyrotechnics
Reason: high risk of fire and injury.
Pets at festivals
Even though some camping areas allow pets:
Festivals are pure stress for animals.
Access to the actual festival grounds is usually prohibited. Our tip: Arrange for good childcare at home.
Weapons, tools & dangerous objects
Clearly:
- Weapons are prohibited.
- Axes, hatchets, saws & similar tools as well.
These items are usually confiscated at the entrances for security reasons.
Laser pointer
Laser pointers are absolutely unwelcome at festivals:
- Danger to eyes
- has caused serious injuries on several occasions
👉 Please just leave it at home.
Sofas, Furniture & Living Room Furnishings
As cozy as it sounds:
Couches, sofas and bulky seating groups are prohibited at most festival campgrounds.
Reason:
- Security risks
- Disposal problems
- Nobody wants bulky waste after the festival.
Conclusion: Know the rules – celebrate in a relaxed atmosphere
Knowing the most important festival camping rules means a more relaxed start to the weekend. Less stress at the entrance, fewer arguments on site – and more time for music, friends and good vibes.
