Tent dismantling & storage – how to keep your tent ready for use for a long time

Whether it's a family tent, a festival tent, or a pop-up tent: every tent benefits from proper care before winter storage. With correct dismantling and careful storage, you can ensure that your tent is reliably ready for use again next season.

After many wonderful camping moments during the warmer months, it eventually comes time to say goodbye – at least temporarily. By following a few simple tips now, you can significantly extend the lifespan of your tent.

Tent dismantling & proper storage

When taking down your tent, you should first remove any loose dirt from the outer tent . Then shake out the inner tent to get rid of sand, grass, or insects.

Important steps:

  • Pack the tent fabric separately from the poles and pegs.
  • Gently clean the tent after camping.
  • Allow to dry completely before packing.
  • If possible, ventilate the tent thoroughly for several days.
  • Check poles and pegs for dirt and clean them.

For longer storage periods:
👉 The tent must be completely dry before being put into the stuff sack.
👉 Store it only in dry, well-ventilated rooms .

❗ Important information

  • Never stuff the tent poles and pegs into the stuff sack together with the tent fabric.
  • Do not use harsh cleaning agents.
  • Never clean the tent in the washing machine.

Damp or dirty storage can lead to mold, mildew, odors and discoloration – these are often difficult or impossible to remove later.

Extend lifespan – impregnation & seam sealing

Our tents are pre-treated with a water-repellent finish. However, small amounts of water may still penetrate through seams or high-stress areas, such as flaps or zippers. Over-tensioning the tent can also cause seams to open.

👉 A seam sealer , applied specifically to the seams, provides a remedy.

What will damage your tent

  • Smoke from charcoal grills or open fires
  • Chemical sprays such as deodorant or hairspray

Such influences can permanently damage the waterproofing. Once a base waterproofing layer is damaged, it cannot be repaired .

Re-impregnate regularly

We recommend waterproofing your tent at least before and after each camping season . This ensures:

  • better UV protection
  • improved water-repellent properties
  • shorter drying time
  • longer lifespan of the tent fabric

A good waterproofing spray is usually sufficient for re-waterproofing.
Here's how to proceed:

  1. Clean the tent with a soft sponge and mild soapy water.
  2. Let dry
  3. Set up outdoors
  4. Impregnate and allow to dry thoroughly.

With proper tent dismantling, thorough drying, and regular waterproofing, your tent will remain functional for a long time. This way, you can start your next camping adventure worry-free.
